Project / Summary

In my body of work, I explore the various representations of greed from a teenager’s perspective. In today’s society, teenagers of my age are labelled as “generation z”. We have been exposed to the internet from a young age and this may have influenced us to seek instant gratification constantly. I believe that in my personal pursuit of such gratification, I became aware of its effect on my perceptions and experiences with greed. As such, I chose to work with this phenomenon that informed my artworks. The set-up of my works is inspired by the collage of posters and objects that I have hung up in my bedroom. The set-up acts like an enlarged version of my bedroom wall, with ample viewing space for viewers to navigate through the works. A clockwise direction is encouraged for viewing the works, where they are hung up according to the intensity of the colours used. The intensity of the colours that I have used aligns itself closely to my intentions for each work. Colours act as a narrative in my overall theme, representing my feelings towards this particular topic of discussion. For instance, artworks with brighter colours innately represent more intensity such as joy and sadness. The audiences are welcome to interact with the objects, whether it be touching them or observing them as if they are scientific objects that are meant to be studied closely. The process of creating my works and curating them allowed me to achieve a greater insight into what greed means and how it can be manifested in various ways. While it is manifested in various ways which I feel best represents my idea of greed that is unconventional and personal, my attachment to material items also serves as a starting point for this body of works. On top of this, the use of familiar faces and symbols in my works is meant to suggest that the audience may have been in similar experiences where they were driven to make certain choices because of greed. I hope that this exhibition initiates various discussions of the spectrum of greed that can be seen in various aspects of life.
